Many of my clients ask me for referrals for home contractors and sadly, I don’t have reliable contacts but I’m always on the hunt for renovators who do a good job and who can be trusted. I’ve had personal experience in hiring the wrong contractor… My renovation cost twice the expected amount and took three times longer than quoted. I wish I’d had this list…
Realtor.com has a piece about the warning signs when meeting a contractor for the first time… “He bristles at your questions about his work history. He says there’s no reason to solicit other contractor bids. His company demands payment up front, in cash. He tells you this is the way renovations get done.”
Contractor red flags can be hard to see, especially if you’ve never hired anyone for a large project on your home. It can be intimidating to quiz an expert on something that’s new to you, and it can take time to properly vet your options.
