Extensive Heritage Preservation Underway at 1 Yorkville
November 10, 2015
Following my last blog post on Toronto’s Official Plan and how it deals with heritage buildings, here’s a perfect example of a neighbourhood that’s experiencing massive redevelopment (Yorkville) but is still incorporating century old buildings into the design.
The building at 1 Yorkville is saving half a block of buildings along Yonge Street. It’s a little sad to lose The Cookbook Store, but the other shops will find new homes. If you’re curious as to what was there, Google Streetview now goes back to 2007 and gives some great snapshots on what the block looked like 7 years ago.
The building plan currently has the 58 storey tower starting from behind the row of buildings, so it will be interesting to see what sort of retail opens up there. Being just north of Bloor, they should see lots of foot traffic so it’s a good thing the tower isn’t being extended to the sidewalk.
